Relink 2318B
Relink 2318B is a double-sided, differentially coated aircraft carpet tape. One side bonds permanently to the carpet backing. The other side holds the carpet to the floor panel and later peels away cleanly, leaving no adhesive residue.
The tape is qualified to AIMS 10-05-014 and IPS 10-05-014-01, so it can be procured to ABS 5648B. It is used by aircraft MRO providers and cabin refurbishment shops when carpet is laid and replaced, and it is supplied from Biolink Australia.
Manufactured by Saint-Gobain Tape Solutions (Biolink GmbH).
- Clean removal from floor panels. The removable acrylic side peels off without residue, so panels need no cleaning and are not damaged.
- Carpet and tape come up together. One removal step instead of lifting carpet and then scraping tape.
- Repositionable at first. The removable side can be adjusted during installation before it builds full adhesion.
- Strong hold on the carpet. The permanent modified acrylic side (0.150 mm) has very good adhesion to all carpet backings.
- Stays put in service. Good tack and shear on the removable side help prevent edge lift and seam slip.
- Durable. Excellent resistance to ageing, weathering, elevated temperature and humidity.
- Airbus-qualified. Qualified to AIMS 10-05-014 and IPS 10-05-014-01; can be procured to ABS 5648B.
- Flammability tested and approved to FAR/JAR/CS 25.853(a), App. F Part 1 (a)(1)(ii).
- Wide service temperature range: -40 °C to +70 °C, short term up to +120 °C.
How it works – aircraft carpet installation
This tape has a different adhesive on each side of a thin, clear PET carrier:
- Permanent (closed) side: modified acrylic, 0.150 mm. This side sits under the liner, bonds to the carpet backing and stays on the carpet.
- Removable (open) side: removable acrylic, 0.040 mm. This side goes onto the floor panel. It has good initial repositionability and later releases cleanly from the panel in one piece.
Typical sequence (version B is applied to the floor panel first, then bonded to the carpet):
- Make sure the floor panel is clean, dry and free of oil, grease, dust and dirt. Cleaning with isopropyl alcohol is recommended.
- Apply the open (removable) side of the tape to the floor panel at 15 °C to 40 °C, adjusting its position as needed, with uniform pressure of 100–150 kPa.
- Remove the white polypropylene liner to expose the permanent side.
- Lay the carpet onto the tape, position it, then press it down firmly.
- Adhesion builds up slowly and typically reaches its final value after 72 hours. Heating above 40 °C speeds this up.
- When the carpet is due for replacement, lift it. The tape comes away with the carpet, and the floor panel is left clean and ready for new carpet.
Because no adhesive stays on the panel, there is no solvent cleaning or scraping between carpet changes. This cuts turnaround time on the aircraft and lowers the risk of damaging panels. Always follow the aircraft manufacturer’s maintenance documentation and your approved procedures.
